Swami Desikan

Swamy VedAntha Desikan (1268-1369 C.E) was born in ThUppul, an agrahAram near Kaanchi VaradarAjar Temple. He is a direct disciple of AtrEya RaamAnujA and spent most of his life at Kaanchi, Thiruvaheendhrapuram and SrIrangam.

His multisided genius and depth of knowledge about Bhagavath RaamAnuja SiddhAntham is a direct result of Lord HayagrIvan's anugraham. In addition to his own brilliant and incisive Sri Sookthis , he saved for posterity  the commentary on SrIbhAshya by Sudarsana Soori  known as SruthaprakAsika during the time of great upheaval at SrIrangam from foreign invasions.

The range and depth of Swamy Desikan's SrI Sookthis are profound. It will take many life times to gain even a small level of understanding of these magnificent SrI Sookthis.

There are more than 125 SrI Sookthis that we are blessed to have from Swamy Desikan. Swamy Desikan created SrI Sookthis are in Sanskrit, Tamil and Praakrutham. They deal with philosophy and religion, devotional lyrics in Sanskrit (SthOthrams), Rahasya GranthAs in MaNipravALam and Tamil Prabhandhams.

SthOthrAs are an instructional media for our AchAryAs for the advancement of our ancient Darsanam of VisishtAdhvaitham.

Swamy Desikan was prolific and blessed us with sthOthrams known for their poetic beauty, bhAvam, dhvani and rasam. The Ojas (power to stimulate Bhakthi to Sriman NaarAyaNa) , the SamatA (Balanced expressions) , SausabdhatA (Usage of refined and precise words) , sabdhAlankArams , alliterations , slEsha (double meanings), upamAs (Similes) , UthprEkshA (Figures of speech) and  many of the 45 kinds of poetic metres  are the noble hallmarks of Swamy Desikan's SthOthrams .
